The Tribeca Film Festival returns to NYC from April 19 to April 30. Founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff, the Festival formed as a reaction to the September 11, 2001 attacks, loss of the World Trade Center, and the subsequent collapse of the Tribeca area of Manhattan. Today, the Festival helps to feature local indie films, documentaries, foreign films, and the most recent creations of both well-known talent as well as the up-and-coming in the film industry.
The Festival, in 2006 and 2007, fielded over eight thousand film entries over fifteen hundred screenings to choose its screening selections. Each year, the Festival’s film line-up hosts several independent films, narratives, shorts, and documentaries. To further entertain guests, the Festival also hosts several discussions with well-known personalities from the entertainment industry, including those involved in film and music. These discussions also feature many of the artists involved in the films the festival screens.
The Festival includes a music lounge, formed with ASCAP, to promote local artists in the music industry. One of the more interesting and well-known features of the Festival is its Artists Awards Program. This program promotes both new and well-known artists and filmmakers. Artists submit original works of art that the filmmakers’ competition then analyzes to select winners. Previous winners of the Artists Awards Program include Julian Schanabel, Chuck Close, and Alex Katz.
The Festival attracts about three million people in attendance each year, including some of the most famous celebrities in the world.
